Landell Mills awarded first project funded by Global Affairs Canada

News 07.10.24 Nigeria Policy, dialogue, regional integration, and governance

We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded a contract titled Building Capacity of Women in Agribusiness in Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Nigeria, under the Climate Action Africa (CAA) project. The contract is funded by Global Affairs Canada and has a value of CAD 127,002.46.

CAA – funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by Alinea International, Econoler and WSP – provides technical assistance to Sub-Saharan African countries who are seeking support in meeting their climate commitments. Through this program, primarily Canadian climate experts are deployed to collaborate with governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local stakeholders to help advance and implement the Paris Agreement.

The short-term technical assistance, Building Capacity of Women in Agribusiness in Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Nigeria, will run for approximately eight months, and the main focus is to design and pilot a diagnostic tool and climate change knowledge curriculum. The diagnostic tool will be designed to create a baseline of information tracking the climate adaptation journey.

Food systems in Nigeria are fragile and face disruptions from shocks and stresses such as climate and environmental change, leading to increasing food insecurity in the country. The impacts of climate change include loss of employment, low production yields, high wastage rates, higher costs of food, food shortages and food insecurity. Women play vital roles in the Nigerian agricultural landscape and are therefore more vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change. Another impact of climate change is that it represents a major threat to Nigeria achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Building Capacity of Women in Agribusiness in Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Nigeria contract has an aim to build the capacity of female actors in Nigeria's agriculture sector. African Food Changemakers (AFC) will be supported in the implementation of a program they have developed, titled Building Resilience Against Climate and Environmental Shocks (BRACE). The program helps agribusinesses to develop the skills, tools, knowledge and support required to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change and environmental shocks through climate-smart practices, monitoring and evaluation, and livelihood diversification. This technical assistance will prioritise women-led agribusinesses.

Key activities that will be carried out by Landell Mills under the initiative are:

  1. The refinement and finalisation of a climate diagnostic tool that will help to assess levels of climate awareness, adaptation strategies, individual capability and organisational needs.
  2. The provision of both physical and online training facilitation and climate adaptation strategies for women-led agribusiness agripreneurs to address the interlinked challenges of food security and climate change.
  3. The development of tools for monitoring and evaluation, and data-gathering, that participants can deploy in their business models to track the climate adaptation journey and its impact on their operations and livelihoods.
