Landell Mills awarded second contract under Climate Action Africa (CAA) project

News 09.01.25 Cote d'Ivoire Environment, water, climate change and disaster risk reduction

We are pleased to share that we have been awarded a second contract under the Climate Action Africa (CAA) project, titled Strengthening Capacities for Monitoring Carbon Stocks in Forestry and Land Use. This follows our initial contract win under the CAA project, which is titled Building Capacity of Women in Agribusiness in Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Nigeria.

The CAA project is funded by Global Affairs Canada, and implemented by Alinea International, Econoler and WSP. It provides technical assistance to Sub-Saharan African countries who are seeking support in meeting their climate commitments. Through this program, primarily Canadian climate experts are deployed to collaborate with governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local stakeholders to help advance and implement the Paris Agreement.

The Strengthening Capacities for Monitoring Carbon Stocks in Forestry and Land Use contract will run for six months. The contract aims to enhance Côte d'Ivoire's capacity to monitor greenhouse gas emissions in the land use sector.

The country faces significant climate challenges, with 70% of emissions coming from land use – driven by agriculture, urbanisation and illegal logging. There is a need for improved technical and institutional capacities for accurate emissions monitoring and reporting, particularly in forestry. The Strengthening Capacities for Monitoring Carbon Stocks in Forestry and Land Use contract will focus on building national capacities for monitoring, reporting and verification of emissions using remote sensing and forest inventories, while emphasising gender-sensitive strategies to support Côte d'Ivoire's climate goals.

Under the contract, Landell Mills will provide technical assistance to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Environment, Sustainable Development and Ecological Transition by:

  • reviewing their current approach to monitoring of land and forest carbon stocks.
  • assessing their current approach in relation to best practice.
  • making recommendations and implementing training to enable key stakeholders in Côte d’Ivoire to pursue an accurate and well-governed approach to carbon stock monitoring.

This will support the country in gaining a better picture of its performance in relation to its Nationally Determined Contribution and facilitate the design of future projects in this field on a firmer evidence base.

Landell Mills will work with a team of two local experts in Côte d’Ivoire, who will bring great knowledge of the institutional context, and remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping.
