Inhambane Fisheries Development Project

The EU made a large investment in rehabilitating the formerly important fishery in Inhambane province. It involved the installation and up grading of fish collection, storage and trans-shipment facilities as well as assisting the artisanal fishermen to improve their vessels and acquire fishing gear. The remote location and difficult security situation made this an exceptionally challenging project. LML provided and eight-man team and were responsible for the installation of essential equipment, vessel operation and arranging the essential light aircraft air transport.

Small Planters Efficiency Study

A sectoral study to determine the incomes arrived from agriculture by the private small-scale sugar cane producers. An analysis of the reasons for differences in yields between smallholders and estate sugar producers and the scope for diversification into others sources of income derived from agriculture. The resultant report provided an action plan and planning documents for Government for future development of the small planter.

Smallholder Oil Palm Productivity Study

The study - based at the PNG Oil Palm Research Association in Dami - had two main objectives: to investigate factors constraining and limiting smallholder productivity and to determine the means of encouraging smallholders to increase production; to design a series of methodologies and mechanisms that could be used by extension agents to encourage improved smallholder production.

Project Lesotho

National Agricultural Extension Project

IFAD was supporting the Lesotho Ministry of Agriculture to restructure its extension services, and Landell Mills was requested to provide technical assistance and training services. An Extension and Training Specialist analysed the existing structure, budgets, and impact of the service and recommended a more focussed and streamlined approach. Staff was retrained and the technical messages made more relevant and timely, and the service was re-equipped with transport and equipment.

Development of Fisheries in the Gulf of Guinea

This 3-year programme provided direct and indirect support for the development of fisheries in the Gulf of Guinea region through provision of credit and shore facilities for artisanal fishermen together with boat building, research and training activities to meet local needs. A centralised planning and management unit was created under the Regional Committee to oversee and steer the programmed activities ensuring adequate budgetary control and the timely and rational implementation of various sub-projects. The unit was also involved in identifying, securing funding for and launching subsequent programme components under the direction of the committee and at the request of regional Governments. LML provided expertise at all levels from administration to technical research

Buner Development Project

A regional development project with a large number of components involving agriculture, infrastructure (roads, bridges, water supply and irrigation) and the promotion of the small business sector.

Landell Mills provided the technical and management services for this major project where the overall objective was to provide rural communities in the Buner District with the rural infrastructure and know-how that would permit diversification of crop activities (poppy eradication); develop income-generating activities and open up access to markets through new and rehabilitated roads. This involved the identification, preparation, design and implementation of village water supply schemes, construction and rehabilitation of irrigation schemes using both surface and groundwater sources and construction and rehabilitation of rural roads using local labour. Income generating activities included the development of small enterprises, marble extraction and processing, community forestry (for fuelwood) schemes.

Project Gambia

Rural Development in Upper River Division

This was a rural development programme that covered all sector development including health, education, infrastructure, and agriculture. The coordinator liased with members of all ministries involved as well as taking particular responsibility for the provision of credit to small businesses and farmers. The agricultural expert who was chiefly concerned with the development of the area through analysis of individual watersheds and the formation of plans which provided maximum benefits to the population but at the same time enhanced and preserved the environmental benefits of the watershed.

Forest Management and Protection Project

The project aimed to conserve natural forest, encourage afforestation and to introduce environmentally stable methods of agricultural and rural development. Landell Mills were contracted to provide a financial and administrative manager to assist in the management of this project.

Project Zambia

Smallholder Services Rehabilitation Project

Responsible for the establishment of District Council Roads Units within 3 District Councils so as to use labour intensive methods for road rehabilitation/construction, emphasis placed on quality and ensuring a high proportion of productive labour. Supervision of construction programmes. Advising on the co-ordination of farmer group promotion and related programmes, including credit. Development and management advice on cooperatives. Designing and training local staff in production of suitable audio visual aids. Organising implementation of training programmes and workshops. Preparation of a monitoring and evaluation system for the project activities including the selection of data and information to be collected, establishment of the criteria and indications against which the results will be gauged and detailing of the methods and procedures of data collection and handling.
